Pass 2 Metadata
Purpose
This page documents the second processing pass, where extracted facts are augmented with controlled metadata and contextual qualifiers. This layer exists to attach meaning and usage constraints without altering the underlying factual content captured during Pass 1 extraction.
In practice, this is the difference between labeling a fact with its applicable context and rewriting the fact to fit a preferred narrative.
It defines how context is applied in a bounded, inspectable way so that later retrieval and generation operate within known semantic limits.
Scope
Includes application of qualifiers, controlled vocabularies, classifications, and domain specific context required to interpret extracted facts correctly. Excludes creation of new facts, synthesis across sources, normalization of conflicting material, and any modification of original extracted statements.
Constraints
- Metadata augments extracted facts without changing their original meaning or scope.
- Controlled vocabularies and enumerations are used to limit interpretation variance and drift.
- Contextual qualifiers are explicit, inspectable, and traceable to their source or governing rule.
- Enrichment does not resolve source conflicts, ambiguities, or gaps introduced in earlier layers.
These constraints preserve the separation between fact and interpretation. Violating them tends to collapse later explanations into opinionated synthesis rather than traceable reasoning.
Notes
Pass 2 metadata defines the semantic boundaries that make controlled retrieval and explanation possible. Overreach at this layer tends to produce outputs that appear coherent and confident while quietly violating source intent.
